ABOUT MIDTOWN ATHLETIC CLUBS:
This multifaceted club has grown to be the leader in the upscale tennis and fitness club industry by combining two important things, fitness and pleasure. Midtown Athletic Club ran our MDX program back in December 2017 as part of their Athletic Trainers Program unlocking leadership potential in 18 individuals. We did an interview with Brian Watkins, the National Director of Learning and Development. Here is what Brian had to say:
"I needed a leadership program that challenged some of our best managers to understand how their use of feedback and communication was essential to growing our associate’s performance. The experiential learning and the passion and enthusiasm Alex and his team brought to the class exceeded my expectations. Every participant in that class not only walked out with skills they could and would use in their daily role, but they went back to their roles energized and touting how great the program is. I can guarantee that we will be expanding our use of the program to all our managers."
"Our initial use was for a group of high potential managers – these are managers we see as having the potential to grow at least 2 roles within 3 years. However, after getting feedback from the participants, our goal is to open this program to more managers. While we haven’t fully defined this as of yet, we want to use this as an incentive for manager growth by making it an invitation only program to those managers who meet certain criteria.
This will be available for all levels of leadership (anyone who is managing a department or a team)."
"Our need came from the fact that recruiting associates with the skill sets we needed is becoming more difficult. We are on a journey to create leaders who can focus on finding associates who share our core values, and then coaching them to be successful in our system. This requires the ability to communicate and provide effective feedback – and the DX program was the best one out there. Our managers not only clearly understood the benefits to communication and feedback, but after taking the course they were given a solid framework to build upon that they could start to use immediately."
"While it is too early to have any metrics, the word of mouth in our clubs has been fantastic. Every participant raved about the program to their club leadership. One 10+ year associate said it “was the best day he ever had at Midtown”. Each participant shared what they learned with their peers and leadership has reports an increase in effective feedback and coaching being done by the participants.
Our intention was to test this program with the hopes of rolling it out to a limited group of high potentials. However, after seeing the impact, we are working on expanding the target audience to a larger group of managers."
